About Shakopee, MN

City of Shakopee Minnesota

The City of Shakopee is located south of the river about a 25-30 minute drive from Minneapolis and only about 20-25 minutes from the Minneapolis/ St. Paul airport in Bloomington MN. The city of Shakope is in the southwest corner of the Twin Cities and has a population of around 35,000 residents. One of the unique features of this town with tons of history dating back to Chief Shakopee is that the city is located on the Minnesota river. The city  was named after the tribal leader of the Dakota Teenatahotonwa tribe, Chief Shakopee.  Memorial Park, located off of Highway 101 and near the Minnesota River and Murphy’s Landing still has ancient burial grounds of its native inhabitants. The city of Shakopee is a rapidly growing town, but yet has the feel of a small town with the local downtown where many business owner retain small businesses. Shakopee is located in Scott County and resides as the county seat. Shakopee alos remains one of MInnesotas fastest growing communities and has plenty of room to grow to the south. There is anticipation for a potential Shakopee high school in the upcoming years and the city will need to decide if they will expand the current Shakopee high School, or if they will build a second. Kindergarten classes are approaching 950 students.

Recreation in Shakopee

There are numerous activites and entertainment option in the City of Shakopee such as Canterbury Park (a horse rac track and card club), Valleyfair (an amusement park), Raceway Park (stock car racing) and Murphy’s Landing (a historic site). The newly appointed Mayor Brad Tabke recently also made a bid for the MInnesota Vikings to come to the area! Although most new businesses and large retailers are located towards Southbridge and Highway 169, Shakopee does have the historic downtown district. I think it would be fantastic if there were to turn the downtown are into a ourdoor shopping mall similar to the Shoppes at Arbor Lakes in Maple Grove. Shakopee has a local golf course, Stonebrooke Golf Course, and is also located to many nearby course such as Ridges at Sand Creek, The Wilds, and The Meadows at Mystic Lake.
